Manage your weight

Reducing your alcohol intake supports weight loss by cutting empty calories, as alcohol is high in calories but has no nutritional value. Drinking less alcohol also helps improve your metabolism and reduce cravings, making it easier to stick to a healthy eating plan and reach your weight loss goals.

Stop Smoking

Cutting your alcohol intake can help you stop smoking, because alcohol lowers your inhibitions and often triggers cravings, making cigarettes harder to resist. Cutting down on alcohol also breaks the common habit of pairing drinking with smoking, helping you disrupt the association and lower your risk of relapse.

Increasing Activity

Becoming more physically active helps improve your sleep quality and boosting your energy levels, making it easier to stay active. Drinking less alcohol also reduces hangovers and fatigue, removing two of the most common barriers to regular exercise.

Whichever you prefer, some people want to stop altogether; many just want to cut back. Both are worthwhile, and your coach will help you set a goal that is right for you.

UK guidance from the Chief Medical Officers is to drink no more than 14 units a week, for both men and women. That is about six pints of average-strength beer or six medium glasses of wine spread across the week. To keep the risk low, it helps to spread your drinking over three or more days rather than saving it up, and to have several drink-free days each week.

It can, alcohol is surprisingly high in calories. A large glass of wine can contain as much as a slice of cake, with no nutritional value. Drinking less cuts those "empty" calories, and because alcohol can lower your willpower around food or smoking cutting back often makes healthy choices easier too. Your coach can support both your drinking, your eating and smoking habits, so they work together.

The service is for adults (aged 18 and over) who live in, or are registered with a GP in, Reading or West Berkshire. If you want to become more active, and reach a healthy weight we are here to help.
